You Asked. We Answered!
A customer recently emailed us at Taste Carolina asking for recommendations on local Raleigh happenings for one summer week leading up to their weekend food tour. Our response below!
I can absolutely give you some ideas as to what to do with your family this week!
First off, there is the PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series! Every Friday night for this summer the Downtown Raleigh Alliance shows classic movies on a giant inflatable screen down at the end of Fayetteville street in city plaza, where the Sheraton and Marriott are. They will close the street down and have a few food trucks, different venders like clothing, jewelry, popcorn and ice cream located on the street. PNC provides chairs to those on a first come first serve basis. The movie starts around sundown at 8ish. It is free to attend! They show flashback Friday movies like the Sandlot, The Goonies, Karate Kid and more!
Every Saturday The Raleigh Wine Shop does free wine tastings from 1-4pm. If your family likes to drink and would like to try new wines!
The Roast Grill is one of my favorite dives to bring family and friends that are visiting. They are open Monday-Saturday 11ish til 4ish. They were featured on the Travel Network’s Man vs. Food. Adam Richman did the chili dog eating contest and has since been beat! They only serve hot dogs and Freda’s homemade baklava. Oh – and coke products in the small 8oz glass bottles! They do not serve ketchup! Their grandmother didn’t want you ruining her perfected chili recipe with that ‘nasty’ ketchup! They are also cash only! Definitely a cool and yummy place to check out that you won’t have on your dinner tour!
On Wednesday’s from 10am-2pm, there is the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market. Some Wednesday’s may feature a specialized item. One of my favorite weeks is when they feature lots of cheese! YUM! There are lots of vendors, farmers, bakers and restaurants set up in the same area down on Fayetteville street in city plaza. Lots of homemade items and a great idea to get a snack or even lunch out there!
On Thursday’s from 5pm-10:30pm, there is the Oak City 7 and Pickin’ in the Plaza (same area as other events down by the Marriott and Sheraton). This is a summer concert series that features local North Carolina bands and is free to check out!
FIRST FRIDAY!! Which is a super cool thing to do with friends and family visiting. I typically enjoy going every month. It’s the first Friday of every month, and downtown Raleigh offers a free self-guided tour of cultural hot spots! Local art galleries, art studies, and museums stay open late to welcome people to come visit. Restaurants will have food and drink specials and there is LIVE music outside of the Raleigh Times Bar. They shut down the section of Hargett Street outside of their restaurant and will have a live band play, food truck come out, and local craft and clothing vendors set up. There is also live music outside of City Market, which is located next to Moore Square (where our giant Acorn resides). The venues and businesses that participate in First Friday will display a large blue flag outside of their place. Circa 1888 is a bar down near the Warehouse District; they are featuring a First Friday Jazz Series this summer.
The Warehouse District of downtown also has other great places to check out! There is BoxCar Barcade, which is a full arcade with a bar. There is Videri Chocolate Factory, where you can see the chocolate making process from bean to bar and get yummy samples. And there is also The Pit BBQ across the street.
Next week on your tour, you will most likely visit Joule, Oak City Meatball, Greenlight, Garland and Bittersweet. Other restaurants that I would recommend trying out are: Gravy, Centro, Gallo Pelon, Beasley’s, Chuck’s, Provenance, Bida Manda, Lucettegrace, Roast Grill, Taverna Agora, and Calavera. There are SO many places that I love so it is hard to pick just a few!
Lastly, since we met at Bittersweet and I told you that it was my favorite, they offer specials all week as well! On Mondays from 7am-3pm they are open, and it’s 1/2 priced pie day. Tuesday-Friday, they are open all day! Tuesdays they are now open until 11pm: Tiki Tuesdays. On Wednesdays they have $7 classic cocktails and then Thursday is Bubbles and Cake, which is a split (glass and a half) of cava and a cupcake! Don’t forget about their amazing desserts! The bourbon pie, s’mores sundae, and chipwich are just a few of my go-tos.
Hope this helps give you a great starting point for an awesome week this summer in Raleigh! Please let me know if you have any other questions!! You can also find a list of all the restaurants that we work with on our website!
